Bangalore ICFAI Tech not recognised : It's BTech = Diploma
It couldn’t have been worse for these students. They were first promised a fancy MBA-BTech degree that was whittled down to a BTech, but have now been informed it will be a mere diploma.
The students of ICFAI Tech — 300 of them, protesting against the college for the past three days — have alleged that the BTech programme is not approved by the University Grants Commission.
“As far as UGC recognition is concerned, it is limited only to ICFAI Tech, Dehradun. They have six branches all over India, which are not under the ambit scope of UGC,” the students said in a letter to the chairperson of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission.
The students have filed a complaint at the Mico Layout police station against the institute under IPC’s Section 420 (cheating). When contacted, one of the college faculty refused to comment on the issue.

IIMB hikes fee by Rs 1.5 lakh, PGP will cost Rs 11 lakh
The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has announced a fee hike of Rs 1.5 lakh for its flagship Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM).
The ensuing 2009-11 batch will now have to shell out Rs 11 lakh over two years, compared to Rs 9.5 lakh by last years batch. The decision was taken on Thursday following a meeting of the Board of Governors presided by IIMB chairman Mukesh Ambani.
Announcing the fee hike, IIMB director Prof Pankaj Chandra said the fee hike was necessitated by increasing costs borne by the institute.``With the implementation of the 6th pay commission, and the corresponding increase in pension funds, we felt it was necessary to increase the fees,'' he said.
Moreover, the institute is also undertaking construction of new buildings which would amount to Rs 45 crore and implementing the OBC quota, he added.
The fee hike will be spread across two years -- for the first year(2009-10), the fee has been hiked from Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5.25 lakh and for the second year (2010-11), the fee has been hiked from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5.75 lakh. The director said the hike would have to be Rs 2.5 lakh to meet the costs, but was limited due to existing circumstances. ``We hope to meet the surplus from our corporate programmes and consultancy work,'' he said. IIMB will also increase its allocation to financial aid and scholarships from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore for the upcoming batch.
Increase in seatsProf Chandra also announced that the a new section will be added to the PGPM course, with the number of seats increasing from 270 last year to 350.
On the OBC quota, he said the institute would be adding more than the 17 pc seats required this year. IIM-B is implementing the OBC quota in phases, with 7 pc of seats reserved last year, 17 pc this year, and 27 pc next year.
The institute will also be starting its Executive PGP programme this year, with 75 students. Prof Chandra said the total strength of the students across all courses would increase from 950 to 1,200. Around 14 faculty members are also expected to be hired this year, he added.

Government Flip Flop - CET for BDS again Compulsory

It's now official. The Karnataka government on 21st March, withdrew its earlier decision to scrap the CET for BDS and the Indian System of Medicine (ISM) courses. Hence, aspirants of BDS courses in the State will now have to clear the Karnataka Common Entrance Test, KCET - 2009.
Minister for Karnataka Medical Education, Ramachandra Gowda told media that the Cabinet decision on March 5 to scrap CET for BDS and ISM courses was taken as seats in several colleges, including the Government Dental College at Bellary, were not filled.
“But, before we could enact the legislation, elections were declared and the code of conduct came into existence. Hence, now the students will have to write CET. If the seats are not filled through CET, then the college concerned can admit students on a first-come-first-served basis, taking the second PUC final exam marks into consideration. A Cabinet approval will be taken in the next two to three days to this effect,” the minister clarified.
