General Scenario
and FAQ
Bangalore is a
Huge
departmental store of Education!
You name it and that is there in this hi-tech city... we mean, you
can learn or study here, almost anything you want. It is one of the best
cities in the country to offer quality education and educational
infrastructure.
Low budget or High budget, everybody has a chance here. One can select
an institution which suits his budget. Even the physically and mentally
handicapped children can get an education for themselves. One who don't
have anyone of their own, is also not betrayed of his right to study.
-
For poor, there are government
and corporation schools/colleges. Even there are some private educational
institutions which relay on poor people! To talk about the quality
of education here, it is worst... bad... and good! Anyway it is
not untrue, that the basic education is available here.
-
For middle class and upper middle class there are
some government and many private educational institutions. There are again
two different kinds of private institutions namely... Aided and
Unaided
institutions. The difference for a student is that the fees and donations
are lesser in aided institutions than the unaided ones. Quality wise most
of these institutions are bad... better... and best
-
For upper middle class and rich class there are a
number of rich schools and colleges with a very rich atmosphere and five-star
facilities. Fees and donations are quite high in the sky and not reachable
to the people of middle class and below. Surely these are not
for all. Quality of education is better and best.
Bangalore South and North
Bangalore being very vast, for the sake of administration, it is divided
into North and South Bangalore. Particularly, there are separate
north and south DDPI offices for Primary schools and High
schools.
-
South part include, Basavanagudi, Chamarajpet, Hanumanthanagar, V V Puram,
Shankarapuram, Banashankari, Vijayanagar, Jayanagar, J P nagar, Koramangala,
Indiranagar, etc..
-
North Part include, Rajajinagar, Malleshwaram, Yashawanthapur, Yelahanka,
Sheshadripuram, Gandhinagar, Vasanthanagar, Shivajinagar, Sadashivangar,
R T nagar, Coxtown, jalahalli, Banasavadi, etc...
Location of Schools: Quite a number
of institutions are centrally located in the city and the ones could not
get a spacious land inside the city are running classes in the buildings
on the outskirts of the city. Generally, at any given point of the city,
there are a minimum of 6-12 schools and colleges around. More than
50% of the schools are located in the busy traffic place and 30% in the
residential locations. Another 10% of the schools are located on the outskirts.
Transportation: This is a big
issue in Bangalore. The city being very vast, the distance
between the school and home is quite a far distance for many students.
In many cases, students have to travel for about one hour hard!.. imagine
the distance. This is because of the difficulty in getting admissions to
the schools near by their house. Hence mode of transportation is very important.
-
Many reputed schools have their own school buses
or vans running between the location of the schools and the important parts
of the city. Rates range from Rs.300 to Rs. 1000 per month.
-
Many other schools and colleges have taken government and private
buses
on charter service instead of their own vehicles. Bus charges range
from Rs.300 to Rs. 1000 per month, payable to schools.
-
Auto & Cycle Rickshaw are still the popular mode of transport
for primary and pre-primary school children. Depending on the distance,
rates ranges from Rs.600 to Rs. 1000 per month.
-
More than all the city buses are available from any
point to any point in the city. Student passes are issued by the government
at subsidised rates, ie.. Bus pass rate for college students is, Rs.110
for 5 months, or Rs.220 for 10 months, plus Rs.30 processing charge.
For the Phd and evening college students it is Rs.330 for 10 months, plus
Rs.30 processing charge. This is generally popular among the High
school and College students.
School Buildings and campus: Many Schools
or Colleges don't even have their own buildings while so many other schools
and colleges have acres together of land and building. Many schools
don't even look like a school! There are quite a number of schools and
colleges which are running in residential buildings and a few other are
existing just on the papers! (See Warning!). Some schools and colleges
have their building amid a busy market, on the first floor of a commercial
complex. But 30% of the schools in the city have really very good school
buildings. Some schools have their offices in the city and school building
on the outskirts.
Facilities and Infrastructure: When
compared to many other parts of India and the state itself, Bangalore as
a whole, provides very good facilities and infrastructure for education.
Around 30% of the schools and colleges have good infrastructure, while
20% lack even the basic requirements like toilets and class rooms. Remaining
institutions provide partial infrastructures.
-
Laboratory, Computers, Library and Playground: Only 30% to 40% of
the schools and colleges have these facilities.
-
Very good school atmosphere, Swimming, auditorium etc..: A hand
full number of schools have these facilities. Some private schools give
cricket, dance, music, painting, karate etc.. extra curricular education
Teaching and Faculty
Though there is no specific scale for measuring the quality of teaching,
generally it is better, compared to the many parts of India.
Some institutions really offer excellent teaching with practicals. Not
only the rich schools and colleges but also some of the middle class schools
impart best education.
As far as the faculty is considered only a 40% schools and colleges
have full time faculty. Rest of them have part-time teaching staff. Reputed
schools have well qualified teachers and a number of private schools have
"so called teachers." Few schools are maintaining the teacher/students
ratio narrow.
Admission details
-
Admission Season: There will , generally,
be a heavy rush for the admission for reputed schools, throughout the year.
Though the admissions are done sometimes around April, May and June, distribution
of applications start from August, September and October. Parents
have to Submit the duly filled-up forms, and schools allot a waiting list
number.
-
Admission Process: Generally, in reputed
schools and colleges, admissions are made on the basis of merit and donation.
Important
hint is that
- do not wait for the admission notification to be published
in the news-papers. Though the donation is banned in the state,
it is just the main cratiria for admission! For the students who
have studied in the same organisation, getting admission is not a problem.
But for the ones who want to change the institution, it is a bit difficult,
because it is at the mercy of the Management.
-
Pre-primary, Primary: First, students
will be called for a written test followed by an oral test. Then the interview
of the parents, for fixing-up donation and to find out the education level
of the parents.
-
High school: There will not be any
written or oral test for students or interview for parents.
Generally, there will not be as much rush as the rush for the admission
at primary and pre-primary level. This is because, more than 75% of the
schools have primary as well as High schools. Hence, the primary school
students of an institution continue in the same institution. The students
seeking the fresh admission are very few. Anyway, it depends on the "kindness"
of the management.
-
Diploma:
-
PUC: Once the result of the SSLC public
examination (equal to class 10) is announced, Rush for the admission starts.
It is generally around May-end & June the results are announced. Some
of the institutions have PUC education too along with their high school.
In such case the admission for PUC, is most likely for its own students
who pass out from the 10th standard. Other Students with 80% and above
score will easily get the admission, while the students with 70% and above
score may have to pay a little donation. Rest of the students have to compromise
with either the donation amount or the reputation of the institution.
-
Degree: PUC results will be
out by the middle of June and the rush starts for Degree courses. Though
there is not much of the rush, it is not so easy to get the admission because,
the number of colleges and seats are limited. Admissions are based on the
merit and donation, and later the admission has to be approved the bangalore
University.
-
Engineering , Medical and Dental: Admission
for these courses will be done through the Common Entrance Examination
(CET) explained separately
here. Other
than these CET admission, private colleges have some management quota,
purely based on donation.
-
Fees and Donations:
-
Schools and High Schools: Generally,
there will be a monthly fees of Rs, 300 and above, in non-residenctial
private schools and colleges. Donation ranges from Rs.2000 to 50,000. Most
moving range is Rs.5,000 to 10,000 for pre-primary and primary onwards.
some schools take Rs.10,000 and above as an initial deposit and refund
that, while the student is leaving the school. Due to the Strict rules
imposed by the government, banning the donations, some schools are planning
to hike the monthly tuition fee by Rs.1000 plus. Education Bangalore has
